A “new level of reality” is different from a simulation, as simulation would imply that it’s not reality itself, but only a replica you can interact with. Representation would be somewhat similar to simulation, as it is a portrayal of reality, but still not quite the contemporary “new level” of reality. The author could be saying that simulation is the new reality as people use it as a form of escapism from the real world as mentioned when he refers to the “hikikomori” people.
